Did you know that there’s a Japanese singer who dresses up like Wally – as in… the elusive bastard from Where’s Wally?! While you’d be forgiven for thinking Mr. Wally is a children’s performer, he actually plays pretty pared-down music (mostly Japanese pop ballads, from what we’ve heard).
His musical talent and earnest demeanour have earned him a rather sizeable following in Hong Kong, and his street performances often attract large audiences of both new and old fans.
Audience members were therefore outraged when police officers interrupted Mr. Wally’s performance in Mong Kok at approximately 7pm on Sunday evening and asked him to keep it down. One spectator filmed a video to identify and “shame” the police officers as they fined the singer following apparent noise complaints.
One person can be heard saying “It’s a public pedestrian area! He can stand where he wants!”, while others said “He’s just a kid, leave him alone”.
In case you don’t remember, square-dance aunties are the middle aged mainland women who dance around the public pedestrian area on Sai Yeung Choi Street while blaring music extremely loudly. Their antics have been the subject of a violent protest, as well as an exposé that claimed they engage in soft prostitution. One district council candidate has even recently proposed to replace them with bikini-clad “sexy ladies“.
All random tension aside – how much of a class act is Mr. Wally? We’ve never seen anyone smile so sweetly (or at all) while receiving a ticket before! Consider us fans.
