Jailous much? Meme points out how rooms in new Hong Kong development are smaller than a prison cell

A meme uploaded to the Hong Kong subreddit by user u/lammatthew725 puts Hong Kong’s micro apartments into perspective in a rather new and alarming way.

Under the header “It’s hard to be a Hongkonger”, the meme compares the standard area of a Hong Kong prison cell (49.5 sq ft) with the smallest rooms at the new Henderson Land residential project in Park One in Cheung Sha Wan (44 sq ft).

The bottom of the meme reads “actually worse than prison”, which is hard to argue with, especially when you consider that you get food thrown in when in jail, not to mention a free gym and the chance to meet new friends with interesting hobbies.

The Park One complex just so happens to be the district of new LegCo elect Yau Wi-ching, who made the news this week after declaring with slightly crude Cantonese slang that young Hongkonger have nowhere to “bang”.

We originally suggested that young dreams could be realised in Kowloon’s by-the-hour hotels, but we now concede that getting banged up in order to bang could be a cheaper option.
