Ever watched a minibus zoom through a busy street and thought “that guy shouldn’t be driving a minibus?”
Well, for one former driver jailed this week, he really shouldn’t have been.
The driver, 43-year-old Lau Wai-ting, lost his license in March 2016 after knocking down a pedestrian in Kowloon Town.
He was found with drugs, though released from custody after it was established the victim was jaywalking and there was no evidence he was speeding or under the influence of narcotics at the time.
Nonetheless, his license remained suspended. Lau, however, didn’t fancy a career change, according to Apple Daily.
Instead of looking for other work to make ends meet, the driver continued his route by stealing his old minibus each day from its owner and returning it at night.
He was caught in April this year stealing the bus for the third time after the owner noticed the vehicle was parked in a different spot.
The case finally made its way to court on Monday, where the judge handed Lau 20 months in prison, suspended his license again (this time for five years), and fined him HKD2,000 (US$256).
