Former chief executive Donald “Bowtie” Tsang was granted bail by the Court of Appeal today, two months into his 20-month prison sentence.

Tsang was released from custody after Justice Wally Yeung set his bail at HKD100,000. The 72-year-old, who was found guilty of misconduct in public office at the end of February, has been in Queen Mary Hospital since the 13th after reportedly suffering an asthma attack.

Before the hearing this morning, Tsang’s wife Selina told reporters that his health had been “fluctuating” recently, but he would “definitely” recover. Tsang returned to the hospital after his court appearance.

The former leader is set to appear in court later this year to face one count of accepting an advantage as chief executive, regarding a house redecoration on a Shenzhen property which took place between 2010 and 2012.

A pre-trial review is set for May 12, and trial is scheduled for Sept. 26.
