People do crazy things when they’re desperate! An Indian businessman was in so much debt he faked his own kidnapping to get US$10,000 ransom money from his family.
SCMP reports, Insan Jaspal Singh owed US$40,000 due to a bad pharmacy business in India. He was visiting his son in Guangzhou before heading to Hong Kong claiming he was kidnapped when he called his daughter.
Singh’s daughter reported the case to the police who spent 441 working hours, costing the police force HK$63,228 to investigate his case and his whereabouts.
Singh called his daughter later saying he was released. Police interviewed him and felt he was lying, he later admitted to making up the kidnapping.
The Magistrate was furious that Singh had wasted so much of the police’s efforts and stress on his family about his safety.
Singh is jailed for two weeks for wasteful employment of police.
