Mainland demand for the iPhone 6 means that the device is worth more than its weight in gold in China. Okay, not really, but we’re not that far off: according to the International Business Times, a gold iPhone 6 can go for USD4,128 (HKD32,000!!) in Beijing.
The phone weighs 4.55 ounces, and with the current price of gold being at USD1222.7 (HKD9,478) per ounce, 4.55 ounces in gold would be worth USD5,460 (HKD42,300). And that’s not including the weight of the phone’s packaging! We’re pretty sure buying actual gold would be a better investment though.

As mainlanders desperately try to get a piece of the iPhone 6 gold rush, people are getting more and more creative in their attempts to smuggle them out of Hong Kong. On Monday, customs officials found 20 iPhone 6 devices, nine iPhone 6 Plus devices, and 930 integrated circuits hidden in the axles of a container truck’s trailer. The stash is estimated to be worth HKD680,000.

The 56-year-old driver was arrested and has been released on bail.
