Finally, some good news!

The city’s dolphin-loving organisations joined forces and rescued the pink dolphin that was first spotted near Lantau Island with horrific injuries on Jan. 17.

The dolphin, which has been named “Hope” by some of the organisations, was successfully captured by a team of vets and researchers on Friday and transferred to the facilities at Ocean Park.

Accompanying them were representatives from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, NGOs Sea Shepherds and the HK Dolphin Conservation Society, and HKU.

The vets found that the poor dolphin was underweight – having lost about 50 kilograms, or 20 percent of his body weight – and had a large infected wound exposing three vertebrae above its fluke (tail).

Ocean Park’s vets gave it fluids and antibiotics intravenously to the animal and removed dead tissue from its wound.

They have also been trying to feed it 8 -10 kilograms of locally caught fish (so that he maintains his regular diet) every day.

By today he had gained 5 kilograms, and the infection has not progressed.

Let’s all hope for the best for this special friend of ours!
