Hong Kong police officers and labour department staff have taken a statement from Erwiana who is said to have been abused and tortured by her employer when in the SAR.
The police involved in the case spoke to the woman in Java, Indonesia last night, who is still being treated for her injuries in the hospital.
The Commissioner for Labour, Cheuk Wing-hing, told the RTHK that the Labour Department officials will focus on claims against the employer for owed wages and denied holidays. The police on the other hand will be in charge of investigating the abuse and serious injuries inflicted on Erwiana.
The female employer, believed to be the one responsible for most of the beating, surnamed Law, was arrested at the airport yesterday when she tried to leave the city to Thailand with a friend. The friend accompanying Law was said to be calm when Law was arrested.
Law is reported to be 44-year-old housewife and was questioned at the Tseung Kwan O police station at 7:45pm last night for another reported abuse against another helper, Susi, between Apr. 2010 and 2011. Media reports say Law was detained at the police station all night for questioning.
The Hong Kong Chief Executive has reiterated his concern over the case and has said that all Hong Kong residents including foreign domestic helpers will be protected by the laws in Hong Kong.
