Increase in immigrants applying for social welfare

It has only been three weeks since the Court of Final Appeal overturned the seven-year residency status requirement for applicants to the Comprehensive Social Security Allowance however, there is already a rise in immigrants applying for social welfare.

According to the RTHK, the government notes that more than 1,400 new immigrants have applied for social welfare in the past three weeks.

Matthew Cheung, Labour and Welfare Secretary says the government needs time to reassess how the CFA’s decision will impact welfare spending and what changes need to be made.
