Ice Water: Hong Kong Customs find biggest ever meth haul inside water filters

Hong Kong Customs have revealed smashing their biggest-ever methamphetamine smuggling attempt to date, after detecting 104kg (the weight of a rather burly bloke) at Hong Kong International Airport.

The haul, worth an estimated HKD42 million on the street, was discovered inside water filters in five trucks travelling from the mainland to Malaysia via Hong Kong on Tuesday.

Officers were alerted by “suspicious” images during X-raying.

Official figures show this was Hong Kong’s biggest ever single seizure of meth. It compares to 141kg confiscated in the whole of last year, and just 50kg in 2012.

The territory is seeing a year-on-year increase, with officials reporting particularly inventive and sophisticated drug smuggling methods across the board. Some of our favourites include salad dressing, plug extension units, shampoo, and curry.

Think you’ve got an idea that could fool them? You’d better make sure it’s pretty damn good, as the maximum penalty for drug trafficking is life imprisonment and a fine of HKD5 million. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Customs officials said yesterday that they will continue to work with their international counterparts and employ high-tech equipment to pursue their anti-narcotics efforts.
