I headbutted a table! Ex-triad leader denies Peninsula ‘knife-attack’

Former Wo Shing Wo triad leader Kwok Wing-hung has denied reports that he was the victim of a knife-attack, after he was rushed to hospital from the Peninsula Hotel on Sunday.

Kwok, also known as “Shanghai Boy”, claimed he sustained an injury to his right eye by accidentally hitting his face on a table corner during afternoon tea, Apple Daily reports (as translated by EJI).

Apple Daily had previously reported that Kwok was slashed with a knife.

As he left hospital surrounded by several bodyguards in the early hours of this morning, Kwok told reporters that he is fine, despite sporting a dressing near his right eye. No stitching was required, he boasted.

Modest Kwok also admitted that he felt as “handsome” as before – coming as a relief to all of us who’ve been desperately worrying about his self-esteem.

Clearly though, not everyone’s buying Kwok’s story.

According to the SCMP, sources “close to the investigation” claim that Kwok was in the ground-floor café in The Peninsula Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui at about 5.15pm, when a man approached and punched him in the face.

“The attacker rushed towards him and then hit his face with the right hand before running away,” the source said. “Initial investigation showed the attacker was carrying a small object in his right hand at the time of the attack, but it did not appear to be a knife.”

Kwok was sitting alone at the time while his bodyguards looked on from a table nearby. Police have classified the case as “assault occasioning actual bodily harm”.

Kwok has apparently been involved in arguments concerning his mistress and the finances of his Macau business.

The Organised Crime and Triad Bureau is investigating the attack and has identified a mainland Chinese man, aged between 30 and 40, as the suspect. No arrests have been.
