Hong Kong public housing
With the public housing waiting list at a record number of 230,000 people, it’s a shock to find that hundreds of public housing units still remain empty despite having been assigned repeatedly, especially when you think about the hundreds of homeless out there.
The Housing Authority explained that these units may be in an inconvenient location or may have had previous unhappy and unfortunate incidents (such as murder or suicides, which makes them “bad luck” or “bad feng shui”). One unit was assigned 51 times only to be rejected again and again.
Last year, 1,719 units were assigned but rejected by applicants, of which 60 percent was assigned more than once.
Examples of undesirable units include one unit in Tin Shui Wai, where the resident murdered his wife and her twin daughters before committing suicide four years ago.
To be fair, come to think of it, we wouldn’t want to live there either.
