How not to treat your host: Visitors warned to behave after attacks on Hong Kong tour guides

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department has warned unruly holidaymakers that they could be barred from the city following a recent spate of attacks on tour guides. Department Assistant Director Fung Pak-ho said yesterday that anyone convicted of such crimes would be placed on a watch list and may be repatriated if trying to re-enter Hong Kong.

The announcement comes after several recent attacks on tour guides, one of which was prompted by a request for the visitor not to smoke, and another of which was sparked by a holidaymaker being denied the chance to visit Disneyland. Well, it IS the happiest place on Earth. You’d be pissed off too, right?

Fung urged tourists to find ways other than violence to vent frustrations, such as good old fashioned words, which can be used to complain to tour companies and the Tourism Commission.

The department, however, stressed that most visitors to Hong Kong are law abiding, with only one out of 10,000 foreign tourists and three out of 100,000 mainland tourists convicted of crimes while here.
