As if we all didn’t know this was going to happen! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure English proficiency levels will drop when Hong Kong switched to mother-tongue teaching (educating students in Cantonese).
An English Proficiency Index published by an education institute recently ranked Hong Kong in 22nd place against 60 non-native-English-speaking countries and regions. Hong Kong falls way behind cities like Malaysia, Singapore and India. The English language abilities of the adult population of Hong Kong is now comparable to those of South Korea, Indonesia and Japan.
