Hongkongers scavenge for expired gourmet hams and cheeses in Yuen Long rubbish dump

Thrifty Hongkongers participated in an impromptu scavenger hunt after an eagle-eyed netizen spotted a massive amount of free goodies, including fancy cheese, butter and Parma ham, discarded in a Yuen Long rubbish dump.

A Facebook user surnamed Wong uploaded a photo showing more than 300 boxes of food that were left for the taking on a Kwai Chung roadside, prompting people (who apparently didn’t mind a pig carcass sharing the dump) to rummage for leftovers on Saturday night.

Pig carcasses were seen near the discarded luxury food

Apple Daily spoke to Wong, who said she came across the treasure trove while driving, and that she did not take any food, which had been expired a month to a year ago.

Her post was shared wildly, igniting a heated debate between netizens who wanted to collect the discarded food, those who turned up their noses at the idea, and those lambasting the food waste.

Some generous Robin Hoods grabbed food and shared it with others, but not before warning that they would not be responsible for any health consequences.

Others provided OpenRice-style reviews on the expired foodstuffs:

“We went there and tasted the food. It was delicious.”

“I tried the bite-sized butter. It was fine and quite tasty!”

“As long as the food hasn’t turned sour or has a foul smell, I don’t think there’s a problem.”

One person even shared a photo of a fridge filled with all the expired products.

It is reported that the goods include Parma ham and two types of cheese by the Italian brand Ferrarini, which is popular in middle-range to upscale Italian restaurants.

No species can say no to free food.

Unfortunately, as delicious as this all sounds, the conditions at the dump were less than favourable for optimal food storage. A stray dog was apparently seen eating off the pig carcasses right by the dumpster-divers.

Yum.
