Last week, a key was used to empty a HSBC cash machine of HKD1.7 million, leading police to come to the genius conclusion that it was an inside job.
Yesterday, a 30-year-old man was arrested in connection to the theft, with police reportedly finding HKD1.1 million in cash during a raid at his flat in Ma On Shan. History dictates that the cash must have been stuffed under his mattress, but we can neither confirm nor deny this.
Surprise, surprise, the man works, or perhaps we should say “worked”, as a security guard for Brink’s, who deliver cash for HSBC.
A source close to the investigation told the SCMP that the man was identified after officers went over the security footage.
He was picked up by police at his home in Kam Fung Court, off Sai Sha Road in Ma On Shan, around 4pm on Wednesday.
The investigation revealed that a masked man used a key to unlock the cash machine shortly after 11am on Friday, stealing two boxes filled with HKD500 notes. The ATM had only been replenished with crispy, new notes 45 minutes earlier.
The man is still being held for questioning and no charges have yet been pressed. The rest of the money is still to be hunted down.
Time to get digging deeper under that mattress!
