Hong Kong’s ‘largest’ anti-ivory protest will be led by 100 schoolchildren tomorrow

Tomorrow, around 100 schoolchildren will be marching against the ivory trade on Hollywood Road.

The children, who attend three different Hong Kong schools, will be protesting at different ivory stores in Central and Sheung Wan, which NGO WilldAid says are the city’s “stronghold” for the trade.

If you’ve ever strolled down Hollywood Road, you may have noticed the number of carved dead elephant (and dead mammoth) parts displayed in shop windows.

WildAid, which is organising the march, claims this will be Hong Kong’s “largest peaceful protest against the ivory trade”.

According to NGO Save the Elephants, 100,000 African elephants were illegally killed for their tusks between 2010 and 2012. Most of these tusks end up in China, often via Hong Kong.

The mini protesters will be meeting at 11am at the playground opposite Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road.
