Hong Kong’s forgotten Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park to be resurrected in Central!

If you’re old enough to remember Hong Kong’s Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park, up the front size on your browser now, because this one’s for you!

Once the largest family entertainment venue in the city, the amusement park, also known as Lai Yuen, is set to reopen 18 years after its closure.

The Hong Kong Economic Journal reports that the park, previously located on the western shore of Lai Chi Kok Bay, will be resurrected near the Hong Kong Observation Wheel on the Central Harbourfront thanks to a new lease agreement with the government.

The original park, bought by the Chiu family in 1961, was the place to go for families in Hong Kong before the big, evil Ocean Park opened its doors in 1997.

According to sources close to the Chiu family, the park will operate from June to October, 11am to 11pm, and will be free to enter (yay, free entry).

Visitors will need to buy tokens (boo, tokens) to pay for rides, games and snacks.

Correction: A previous version of this article said Lai Chi Kok amusement park closed in 1977 and that Ocean Park was opened in 1997. That is incorrect. The Lai Chi Kok amusement park closed in 1997, and Ocean Park opened in 1977.
