Hong Kong’s about to get a lot more crowded with 70 million tourists

As if Hong Kong’s not crowded enough, a Tourism Commission report has suggested Hong Kong can cope with a projected 70 million visitors in 2017, a figure most Hong Kong residents are leery of.

With daily struggles to squeeze onto trains, get tables at restaurants, and navigate shopping malls, more mainland visitors will strain the city’s infrastructure and create even more resentment among Hong Kong people at mainlanders.

Popular places like Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, Ocean Park, and Causeway Bay are no longer enjoyable for many locals with most of the time spent queuing. In addition, mainland tourists’ poor etiquette frustrate many locals, who cite their habits of urinating and defecating in public.

In 2012, Hong Kong received 48.6 million visitors – can you imagine what it’d be like if that figure is doubled?!

Perhaps the government should seriously rethink this prediction.
