Hong Kong women suffers swollen limbs and mercury poisoning from whitening facial cream

What would you suffer for lily-white skin? Irritability, tremors, insomnia, damage to your nervous system, deterioration of memory, hearing, vision, taste, total renal failure?

How about all of those?

Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection (CHP) yesterday warned the public to steer clear of a cosmetic cream called  “YIFUMEI Supple And White Night Cream”, after a 42-year-old woman was found to have mercury poisoning when attending A&E with swollen limbs.

It seems the woman took herself to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital with the symptoms on three separate occasions before she finally stopped using the cream.

She said she had been slapping on the product for a month before she noticed her extremities looked like those of the Michelin Man.

Testing of the cream found mercury levels 27,317 times the acceptable level… so not very acceptable at all.

“Using the product may cause serious side-effects,” the CHP said in a statement. “People who have used it should stop immediately and consult healthcare professionals as soon as possible if they feel unwell or are in doubt. Members of the public are urged not to buy or use cosmetic products of unknown composition or from doubtful sources.”

Still, at least your skin would be glowing white like a ghost as you lay in your coffin… like a ghost.
