Did you eat any rice dumplings during the recent Dragon Boat Festival?
For those of us who had a tad too many rice dumplings, having some slight stomach discomfort due to indigestion is normal, but a foreigner in Hong Kong recently got some gastric pain for a very different dumpling-related reason.
In a recent post on the Hong Kong Discuss Forum, a poster shared what happened when she treated her boyfriend to some rice dumplings that her mother had made.
“He is a foreigner and had not tried rice dumplings before,” she said.
“So I gave him a brief introduction about rice dumplings and told him to reheat them before eating.”
The poster said her boyfriend had stomach pain after eating the Chinese delicacy, which is made with glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves.
Revealing why he had gastric pain, she said he thought the rice dumplings were like lettuce wraps and… he ate the bamboo leaves as well.
“It’s difficult to not get gastric pain like this,” she added.
A commenter commiserated, saying he had accidentally eaten a bit of bamboo leaf previously and that it was very bitter.
“Remember to explain clearly to him next time,” said another.
