Donations made to Harvard University by two Hong Kong property tycoons are among the biggest charitable donations of the year, the whole world over! We know where their kids are going to college.
In September, brothers Ronnie and Gerard Chan donated a total of USD350 million (HKD2.7 billion) to the US university’s health school via the Morningside Foundation, which was set up by pair’s Hang Lung property group.
It marked Harvard’s biggest gift in its 378-year history, and divided into the two cheques of USD175 million each, makes the world’s third and fourth biggest donations this year, according to a report from Wealth-X.
The Chans are the only non-Americans on the list, which is headed by Warren Buffet’s USD2.1 billion gift to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and GoPro boss Nicholas Woodman’s USD500 million gift to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
In a move that is likely to really piss off his kids but make them much better people, Ronnie Chan has vowed to leave nothing to them when he dies.
The two brothers have a combined wealth of USD2.8 billion (HKD21 billion).
