Hong Kong triads supply Mexican cartels to meet methamphetamine demand

As demand for crystal meth skyrockets, members of the Hong Kong 14K and Sun Yee On triad gangs are supplying Mexico’s notorious Sinaloa cartel with the raw materials to make meth. The Sinaloa cartel is perhaps the most powerful drug trafficking organisation in the world.

The connection emerged following the biggest drug busts in recent years in Guangdong, which suggests that Hong Kong triads have been seeking to extend their networks further. Hong Kong triads supply the Sinoloa cartel with precursor chemicals such as ethyl phenylacetate and ephedrine to manufacture meth for the insatiable American market.

These chemicals are severely regulated in Mexico and the United States, but Hong Kong does not issue end-user certificates to ensure the buyers of precursor chemicals are the actual recipient of the materials. These lax controls allow gangs easy access to the chemicals for supplying to overseas drug cartels
