Hong Kong tourist’s leg amputated after bus crash in Guangdong, 16 others injured

A Hong Kong man in his 50s, who was severely injured in a tour bus crash in Guangdong yesterday, had to have part of his leg removed.

His left leg was amputated below the knee at Shantou hospital last night, Apple Daily reports.

The tourist and 43 other people were on the bus as part of a three-day tour around Chaozhou and Shantou, led by Guang Dong Travel.

He and 16 other people onboard, including his wife and son, were hurt when the tour bus collided with another coach on a highway in Jieyang City, at around 2:45pm yesterday.

A passenger told the SCMP that the force of the collision had thrown the tour guide crashing through the bus’ windshield.

The family of three are hospitalised in Shantou. Four other victims were taken to Huilai County People’s Hospital in Jieyang City, while the rest of the tour group was taken back across the border to Hong Kong, where 10 members were hospitalised.

The tour guide is reported to be in stable condition following an operation, but has yet to regain consciousness.

Some of the passengers told local media outlets that they suspected the tour bus driver had dozed off before the accident.

In response, a spokesperson for Guang Dong Tour said the cause of the accident is still being investigated.
