A Hong Kong man in his mid 40s was killed in a traffic accident in Iceland while trying to view the Northern Lights on the day he arrived in the country, local media reports.
The victim, surnamed Choy, had arrived in Iceland on Saturday morning, Apple Daily reports. He was in a group of 10 tourists travelling through the country in two cars, South Iceland Police said on Facebook.
They had parked their cars on Sólheimasandur Beach that evening when Choy and a friend left the vehicles to look at the Northern Lights, reports Iceland Monitor.
Choy was struck by a westbound car driven by another tourist just before 11pm local time, and was rushed to hospital with severe injuries. He could not be resuscitated.
According to the Iceland Review, neither of the cars being driven by Choy’s party had their lights on, and there are no signs on the road warning drivers of pedestrian traffic, despite a nearby planewreck making it a popular tourist destination.
The incident is being investigated by the South Iceland Police. The Chinese Embassy in Iceland is liaising with Choy’s family and local police, and the Hong Kong Immigration Department said it would provide assistance where necessary.
