About 1,000 Hongkongers who were part of 45 tour groups set to depart today to May 26 to Vietnam have cancelled their trips, as anti-Chinese protests escalate.
Yesterday, when two Chinese have been reported to have been killed in the riots, Hong Kong amped up its travel alert warning to Vietnam from amber to red. Protestors are expressing anger over a Chinese oil rig in the disputed Paracel Islands.
The SCMP reports, there are currently about 14 tour groups consisting of 350 Hongkongers in Vietnam vacationing, their situations are being monitored by the Travel Industry Council everyday, and most are expected to return to Hong Kong by Tuesday.
