Hong Kong will be opening its first private school offering a mainland Chinese curriculum to cater to mainland families living in the city.

A site in Tin Shui Wai, near Hong Kong Wetland Park, has been earmarked for the school, which will offer 12 years of primary and secondary education.

The Education Bureau said Tuesday that it is inviting submissions from private sector organizations who are interested in establishing the non-profit school.

“In recent years, the Mainland has become our greatest source of direct external investment… [but] there is still no primary or secondary school offering the Mainland curriculum in Hong Kong,” the Education Bureau wrote.

Presently, it is difficult for children from mainland China in Hong Kong to reintegrate into mainland schools when they leave the city, the bureau said, adding that it expects the demand for mainland Chinese curriculum school places to rise.

The school is expected to open in the 2025/26 school year, depending on construction progress.

Hong Kong has about 50 international schools offering non-local curricula, catering mostly to the children of expatriate families in the city.
