Hong Kong teens ridiculed for misunderstanding French flag filter as symbol of LGBTQ progress

Three young Hongkongers have become the subject of ridicule online after captioning their French flag profile photos with various messages of support for same-sex marriage.

All three applied the filter to their profile photos with various messages of support for same-sex marriage. One caption read “France has legalised same-sex marriage. This is how to endorse popular causes.”

Netizens have been quick with harsh words for the teens, calling them “trash”, “dicks” and “blindly following brats”, referencing the fact that two out of the three captions had made some comment about jumping on the LGBTQ bandwagon.

Facebook’s French flag filter was introduced over the weekend after the terrorist attack on Paris which left 129 civilians dead and 352 injured.

The teenagers’ faux pas comes after Facebook rolled out a rainbow flag filter in June to celebrate the legalisation of same-sex marriage in the United States of America.

Hongkongers who wish to mourn the victims of the Paris attacks can attend tonight’s 6.30pm vigil at Tamar. The French consulate has also opened a condolence book at its Admiralty Centre offices from today to Wednesday.
