Hong Kong swivel chair killer found to be mentally ill, sent to hospital not jail

A Hong Kong kitchen helper who threw a swivel chair from a roof, killing a passerby, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and will serve a hospital order instead of doing jail time.

Tong Mong-leong, 24, was sentenced yesterday to the unspecified period of hospital time after two psychiatrists confirmed that he is mentally ill, reports the SCMP.

He will be released if and when doctors deem him to be fit to return to society.

Tong previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter, explaining to the court that he heard a voice tell him to throw the chair from a rooftop above Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mong Kok on June 10 last year.

The chair hit 29-year-old Wong Wai-tak, leaving him with a 10-centimetre-long fracture on his skull and exposing underlying brain tissue.

Wong died shortly after.
