A man who jumped from a Hong Kong residential tower killing himself and the baby he was holding has been identified as the boy’s grandfather.
The incident, which is being treated as a suicide and murder, occurred at around 12:45pm today at Choi Yee House on the Choi Tak public housing estate in Choi Hung.
Chief Inspector Tam Wai-shun confirmed that a 68-year-old grandfather jumped from the 13th floor with his 13-month-old grandson.
According to police quotes reported in the SCMP, the out-of-work construction worker had no history of mental illness or domestic violence, but told his family that morning that “he thought of committing suicide”.
The grandfather’s wife was in the kitchen when her husband jumped, the boy’s father was in the bedroom, and the boy’s mother was at work.
Police are still investigating whether the boy was thrown to the ground first or held by the man as he jumped.
The baby’s body was found on the podium of the estate’s badminton court, about 10 metres from his granddad’s body on a terrace above the entrance.
