Hong Kong students try to save HK’s Chinese White dolphins

Over 50 Hong Kong students came together on Jan. 8 to deliver handwritten postcards to the Secretary of Environment, each demanding immediate action to save the Chinese White dolphin population.

With fewer than 61 dolphins remaining, and nine reported deaths in 2013, the long-term future of Chinese White dolphins are under threat.

Including the first batch of postcards delivered on Jun. 2013, over 6,000 letters have been sent to the Environmental Bureau. The students’ letters are asking for immediate designation of the surrounding waters of Western Lantau and Soko Islands as Marine Parks with a clear timetable included in the government’s 2014 policy address and an urgent best practice management plan for the Chinese White Dolphins in order to restore the dolphin population in the territory’s waters.

The students were supported by Ark Eden Foundation, a Lantau-based environmental charity which works to preserve Hong Kong’s natural environment.
