Hong Kong student, 22, and adopted rescue dog killed on level crossing crash in Taiwan

A 22-year-old Hong Kong student and her adopted rescue dog were killed on Monday night after a train crashed into the woman’s car on a level crossing in Taiwan.

The third year tourism student, surnamed Wong, strayed onto a level crossing in the southern city of Kaohsiung just before the barrier gate came down.

A dashboard video from a car behind shows a train smash into Wong’s vehicle at high speed just seconds later.

The car was pushed for nearly 200 metres down the tracks, and it took firefighters more than an hour to free Wong’s lifeless body from the wreckage. Her newly adopted mongrel dog was also killed.

Wong, who was studying at Shih Chien University’s Kaohsiung campus, is said to have only got her Taiwanese driving license in September.

Speaking to the SCMP, Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said, “The department will continue to maintain close contact with the families and the trade office, to follow up on the incident and provide practical assistance.”
