It’s time to break out the Uniqlo thermals and instant hand warmers—Hong Kong is set to see its coldest New Year’s Day since 2005.
According to the observatory, the minimum temperature on Jan. 1, 2021, as well as New Year’s Eve, is forecast at 8 degrees Celsius in the urban area. The New Territories is expected to see temperatures a few degrees lower.
According to data published by the Hong Kong Observatory, the coming New Year’s Day will be the coldest in 16 years. The last time temperature on New Year’s Day fell to the single digits was 2005, when the observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius.

Hong Kong typically welcomes the new year with warm weather, with temperatures hovering in the double digits.
The city has seen unusually balmy days in recent weeks, with the maximum temperature in November averaging 26.4 degrees Celsius—the highest in the observatory’s records for the month ahead of Christmas.
