Hong Kong rescue efforts underway for Nepal earthquake survivors

A Nepalese group in Hong Kong is appealing for generous Hongkongers to open up their wallets and hearts after a devastating earthquake hit the Himalayan nation on Saturday.

Durga Gurung, chairman of Non Resident Nepali Association, is calling on the people of Hong Kong to donate emergency supplies such as medicines and blankets for the disaster-ravaged country.

He said that the supplies can be left at the Nepali Consulate in Tsim Sha Tsui, after which they will be sent directly to the worst hit areas.

Some 1,000 blankets and flashlights have already been purchased, and the group is in the process of opening an account for monetary donations.

Local volunteers have also been contacting the Nepali consulate to offer relief help on the ground, and consul general Mudita Bajracharya said that visa restrictions will be waived for those volunteering.

The actual situation on the ground in Nepal is still very unclear at the moment as communication is patchy, however powerful aftershocks are still occasionally occurring, Gurung told the SCMP.

The Hong Kong Red Cross has donated HKD500,000 to repair damaged roads and fix downed communication lines. World Vision Hong Kong also sent HKD1.56 million alongside 200 staff members to aid survivors.

UNICEF has mobilised rescue operations and will be bringing emergency supplies for children. Oxfam is also asking Hong Kong to donate a total of HKD2 million for disaster relief work.

Officials have tallied the casualties from the massive earthquake to more than 3,300 dead and 6,500 injured.
