Hong Kong reports lowest number of new COVID-19 cases in weeks

Hong Kong’s number of new coronavirus infections has dropped to the single digits for two consecutive days, with the Center for Health Protection reporting four new cases yesterday and five new cases today. This weekend marks the lowest numbers of new coronavirus cases since the “second wave” of cases hit the city over three weeks ago.

At the time of writing, the total number of cases in Hong Kong is 1,010. Today’s new cases involve three males and one female, ranging from 1 to 79 in age.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan, who heads the CHP’s communicable diseases branch, said in a press conference that four of today’s new cases had a recent travel history. The remaining patient is a close contact of a previously confirmed case.

Two cases, involving a 72-year-old woman who had recently been on a cruise to Argentina and Paraguay on a cruise and a 14-month old baby who recently returned from the UK, were asymptomatic.

In today’s press conference, Chuang said it was “possible” that the reduced opening hours of testing clinics over Easter could have influenced the number of recorded cases. “I saw that many Hongkongers have been going out [to beaches and on hikes] this weekend, but we do encourage people to continue practicing social distancing measures,” Chuang said.
