Hong Kong protestors are going ‘off the grid’ by turning to an app that negates the need for internet access and a mobile phone network amidst fears of a government imposed information blackout.
Occupy Central organisers urged pro-democracy groups to download FireChat on Sunday following rumours that cellphone networks were to be shut down.
Although no blackouts have been reported yet, some protestors have been complaining about bad reception.
The FireChat app, which allows smartphone users to communicate anonymously via Bluetooth of WiFi, has been downloaded by 100,000 people in the last 24-hours, according to developers Open Garden.
They say the application was used simultaneously by around 33,000 people between Sunday and Monday morning.
Wonder what they were all chatting about?
