Hong Kong prison inmate hospitalised after slashing wrists with broken spectacle lenses

An inmate from Stanley Prison was sent to hospital last week after cutting his wrists with the broken lenses of his spectacles.

Correctional officers at Stanley Prison discovered the 34-year-old – who was already in the prison’s hospital observation ward – with slashes to both his wrists at 9:30am on Thursday morning.

After some investigation, it was discovered the man, incarcerated for theft, had broken his glasses and used fragments from the plastic lenses to cut himself.

He was sent to public hospital for treatment and will be visited by a clinical psychologist.

“The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm,” a spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said.

Just last week, an 18-year-old convicted drug trafficker was hospitalised after deliberately drinking cleaning fluid at Pik Uk Correctional Institution in Clear Water Bay.
