Hong Kong primary school accused of brainwashing children with ‘China is Mother’ song

An all-girls primary school in Hong Kong has been accused of nationalist brainwashing after one child came home claiming China is her mother.

Parents have complained that the Sacred Heart Canossian School in Mid-Levels has been repeatedly playing the nursery song “China is Home”, which is comprised of four lines saying China is home and China is mother.

The song, which mentions the word “China” 130 times, is accompanied by a video featuring repeated scenes of the Chinese flag being raised at mainland landmarks.

According to Apple Daily, one parent complained on Facebook that her daughter told her China is her mother.

That’s got to be pretty annoying after the whole nine months womb incubation and labour stuff.

Evan Chan, a member of the Parents Concern Group on National Education, said the engaging melody and repetitive lyrics of the song could be working like hypnotism on the children.

Student group Scholarism, which was formed in protest of plans to introduce nationalist education in Hong Kong, said they will write to the school on behalf of concerned parents who have contacted them.

However, the Catholic school’s principle Chow Chi-kin said the song was simply being played to match the current school-wide theme of “country”.
