Hong Kong police launch another jaywalking crackdown, starting… NOW!

Bet you thought you were safe, didn’t you? Crossing the road with such unabated nonchalance since the last crackdown on jaywalkers ended in January?

It’s time to bow to the little green man once again, however, as the Hong Kong police begin another week-long territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign, starting from today.

From now until March 24, officers will be on the lookout for anyone flouting road safety rules, including disobeying traffic signals, climbing over kerbside fences and central reservations and crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge or subway passage.

Those committing serious violations will receive summonses, while those just ballsing up a bit will get a verbal warning.

In January, almost 1,400 people received summonses and 154 received verbal warnings.

Old folks are being targeted particularly, as seven out of the nine pedestrian fatalities to February this year involved victims aged 60 or above.
