Hong Kong police begin arrests as Causeway Bay protest site is slowly dismantled

Hong Kong police have begun arresting the few protesters refusing to leave the last remaining protest site in Causeway Bay.

A prominent pro-democracy activist in his 90s known as “Grandpa Wong” was among the first to be arrested, marking his third detention so far this year, including one at the Admiralty site last Thursday. This guy just can’t get enough prison grub!

Unlike the scenes there, however, all those being arrested have so far walked to the police buses rather than being carried. Some protesters sobbed as they were taken away and chants of, “I want real universal suffrage” continue.

Officers spent the entire morning warning the group of just 17 to leave, but to no avail. They insisted that they would stay and risk arrest.

Meanwhile, police employed bolt cutters and other tools to dismantle the protest camp behind them, removing banners, tents and makeshift furniture, which is now being taken away by grapple trucks.
