Hong Kong parking fines not pricey enough

Traffic police are claiming current parking fines are not expensive enough for drivers to be deterred from breaking the rules.

Chief Superintendent Paul Stripp is asking the fine be increased from HK$500 to HK$820 after announcing more than 860,339 parking tickets were issued in the first 10 months of 2013, 101443 more than the whole of 2012.

Additionally, illegal parking takes up 60 percent of traffic officers time, so a call to review the HK$320 fine. Hong Kong’s last parking fine increase was in 1994.

The Transport and Housing Bureau claims it will review the penalties at a suitable time reports the SCMP.
