Hong Kong netizens claim fake Facebook mum lied about illnesses, miscarriage and own suicide

A woman, who claimed to be a mother, to have suffered multiple illnesses and then to have effectively come back from the dead on Facebook, has been outed as a fake by Hong Kong netizens.

According to Ming Pao Daily, for the last four months, a woman referring to herself as Li Tung told stories of her many illness – including postnatal depression, meningitis, appendicitis and a miscarriage – to win sympathy from other Hong Kong mums online.

She also reportedly collected the addresses, telephone numbers of ages of the children of around 60 local mothers who were expecting to receive second-hand baby goods in return.

However, suspicions were aroused last month when someone claiming to be Li’s husband wrote on Facebook that she had jumped to her death from a building because of hallucinations.

A few days later, the “husband” said Li’s heartbeat had returned.

After some investigation, it was discovered that Li had been posting photos of another mother from Japan and claiming them as her own.

When confronted, she apparently told her Facebook friends that she lied to get sympathy as she had suffered a miscarriage when her boyfriend pushed her.

Li promised to delete the personal details she had collected from the mothers, while lawmaker Charles Mok told Ming Pao that as she has not profited from her actions, it’s doubtful Li has committed a criminal offence.
