Hong Kong netizens raise money to cover fine of elderly man selling desserts on the street

An elderly man who was arrested and fined for illegally selling desserts outside Choi Hung MTR station has seen Hong Kong netizens come to his rescue.

After hearing his story, Benson Tsang had a whip-around on social media and raised the HKD6,000 the old man owes the court.

This is the second time the hawker had been arrested for selling his traditional desserts – red bean, green bean and sago soup – for HKD12 a bowl.

According to EJI, he covered his first fine by borrowing the money off friends but was too embarrassed to ask them for help again.

He was reportedly preparing to go to jail when local netizens took up the cause.

Tsang insists that he will encourage the old man to let passersby sample his sweets for free if there is any excess money.

He might also want to encourage him to find another way to make money, or at least another spot that hasn’t been compromised.
