Hong Kong the 5th best Asian travel destination after Hokkaido, Shanghai: Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet, the world’s biggest publisher of travel guides, today revealed its first ever list of the best holiday destinations in Asia.

Hong Kong was placed smack dab in the middle of the list, at number 5 out of 10. Not too shabby, considering the sheer size and wonders of our continent.

Describing the Fragrant Harbour as a “skyward-bound metropolis”, the guide drew attention to Hong Kong’s “natural heritage”, such as the UNESCO-designated geopark in Sai Kung (pictured above).

Also mentioned were eco-tours at the walled village of Lai Chi Wo, the recent splash of street art in Sham Shui Po, and restaurants using local produce, like Fish School.

Here are the 10 best travel destinations in Asia for 2016, according to Lonely Planet:

1. Hokkaido, Japan
2. Shanghai, China
3. Jeonju, South Korea
4. Con Dao Islands, Vietnam
5. Hong Kong, China
6. Ipoh, Malaysia
7. Pemuteran, Indonesia
8. Trang Islands, Thailand
9. Meghalaya, India
10. Taitung, Taiwan
