Hong Kong MTR indecent assault cases up 20%, youngest victim only 12

The number of indecent assault cases on the MTR in the first half of 2016 has seen a 20 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to statistics provided by the Railway Police District.

Reported cases of indecent assault are up 20.4 percent, while incidents of female victims having indecent photos taken by hidden cameras are up 22.2 percent, reports Apple Daily.

Victims of indecent assault, the majority of whom were female, were aged between 12 and 54; while victims in cases where perpetrators took unauthorised up-skirt photos were generally on the younger end of the scale, aged between 15 to 36 years old.

Other crimes taking place on the MTR in the first half of the year include wounding and serious assault, up 30 percent, and theft, down 21.9 percent.

However, reported cases of crime taking place on the MTR in total are down 11.6 percent.

The police say they will be increasing the number of officers on patrol and carrying out anti-crime operations, while the MTR Corporation urges passengers to report any crime they witness to staff or the police.
