The Hong Kong Baptist University researchers found that two-thirds of runners do not train well enough before taking on marathons.
Researchers say runners who don’t undergo enough training are risking their health and even their life.
Amateur runners, participating in the 10km races, are usually the least equipped and trained for such marathons. In fact, two-thirds of the 10km runners admitted to not having trained at all or only once a week for the run.
Survey coordinators advised that half and and full-marathon runners should train about five to six days a week.
Between 2006 to 2012, two runners died from sudden heart attacks running marathons. A total of 37 runners were injured and sent to hospital in 2013.
The next marathon in Hong Kong where 73,000 runners have signed-up is set for Feb. 16.
