Hong Kong manhunt for mainland kidnapping gang that fled with HKD28 million ransom

Two as-yet unidentified suspects

In a story that sounds like it’s straight from a Hollywood movie plot, a huge manhunt is underway in Hong Kong after a gang of (thought-to-be) mainland kidnappers fled with a HKD28 million ransom after releasing their female victim.

Officers in bullet proof vests and helmets set up road blocks all across the territory last night after a wealthy Hongkonger called police following the handover the cash near Kowloon Peak.

According to a report by Ming Pao Daily, a gang of five or six men, speaking Mandarin and therefore thought to be mainlanders, broke into a mansion on Clear Water Bay Road, Sai Kung, on Saturday night, taking around HKD2 million worth of cash and valuables and kidnapping a 29-year-old woman.

They first demanded a ransom of HKD40-50 million from the mansion owner, but the thrifty fellow managed to haggle them down to HKD28 million.

You don’t get rich without being tight, as they say.

The woman was released unharmed in Tseung Kwan O after the money was handed over.

According to reports, the gang fled in a white Honda van that has not been seen since.
