Macanese police are investigating a murder-suicide which took place over the weekend in which a Hong Kong man attacked his girlfriend with a meat cleaver, then jumped out of the family’s residential building with his two-year-old daughter in tow.

The 34-year-old man, surnamed Leung, lived with his 30-year-old girlfriend, surnamed Wong, and their toddler at the luxury One Oasis apartment complex in Coloane. According to Ming Pao, Leung, who had recently found a job in Hong Kong, returned to the flat at about 4am on Sunday. After the family’s domestic helper left a few hours later, Leung and Wong got into a dispute, and Leung allegedly attacked Wong with a meat cleaver in their bedroom.

Wong, who sustained multiple non life-threatening wounds, fled to the building’s ground-floor lobby. While she was calling for help, Leung picked up his two-year-old child and jumped from the seventh-floor apartment.

Paramedics confirmed that Leung was dead on the scene, while his daughter was certified dead after she was sent to the hospital. Wong, who sustained injuries to her back, neck, and hand, is reported to be in stable condition. A bloody meat cleaver was seized from the crime scene as evidence.

According to Apple Daily, Macau police said the couple often argued over relationship issues, and that Leung lashed out from “low self esteem” because he had been unemployed until recently. The family, who were all Hong Kong citizens, had been living in a two-bedroom apartment in Macau for over 2 years.

An investigation by the Macau police force is underway.
