Hong Kong man, 22, killed in Koh Samui motorcycle crash, girlfriend injured

A 22-year-old Hong Kong man surnamed Chan died on Saturday afternoon after he and his girlfriend were injured in a motorcycle crash in Koh Samui.

Chan and his girlfriend, surnamed Wong, were riding a rented motorcycle near Lamai Viewpoint at around 5pm local time on Saturday when they collided with an ice delivery truck.

Chan, who was not wearing a helmet, was certified dead on the scene by emergency paramedics.

Wong, also 22, was riding pillion and wearing a helmet, according to Apple Daily. She sustained serious head injuries and was sent to hospital, but has since regained consciousness.

Local outlets report that the young couple had been dating for over a year after meeting at university. Wong, who went on to study at a hotel management school in Switzerland, started interning in Koh Samui two months ago as part of her course.

Chan had arrived on the island on Friday evening to visit his girlfriend during her time off. On the day of the accident, Chan rented a motorcycle to take Wong on a self-led tour of the island and was reportedly provided only one helmet by the rental agency, which he gave to his girlfriend.

In May, four tourists, including a Hong Kong woman, died in a speedboat accident in the waters off Koh Samui.
