Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair closes with a casual 17 reported thefts in 4 days

The Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair closed yesterday with a total of 17 reported thefts. It’s amazing these guys make any money at all.

The cases revealed by police yesterday include the theft of a whole bag of diamonds, worth HKD460,000, on Saturday, and a HKD830,000 rock on Thursday, the opening day of the fair at Wan Chai’s Convention and Exhibition Centre.

According to the SCMP, three Hongkongers were arrested in Kwun Tong and Kowloon Bay yesterday over the theft of the HKD830,000 diamond after a staff member at one of the booths noticed the stone had been swapped with a fake.

A worker also called police on Saturday night after realising she had inexplicably lost a bag of diamonds.

We’ve all been there, right?

Last week we reported on 12 thefts, totalling more than HKD5 million, on the opening day of the show alone.

Two men and five women, all from mainland China, will appear at Hong Kong’s Eastern Court today charged with theft and attempted theft.
